Top Eco-Tourism Experiences in Periyar National Park

The Periyar Tiger Reserve was undoubtedly the highlight of your visit to Kerala. Periyar Tiger Reserve (also known as Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary) is one of India’s most popular and well-managed wildlife sanctuaries. Located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the Western Ghats in Kerala, it is a stunning expanse of lush biodiversity. Even though it’s called a tiger reserve, it also hosts a significant population of wild Asian elephants.

The Periyar Natural Reserve is spread across the Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam districts in Kerala, southern India. The protected area spans 925 square kilometers, with a core “critical tiger habitat” of about 881 square kilometers. The centerpiece of the reserve is Periyar Lake, a picturesque 26-square-kilometer artificial reservoir created in 1895 by the construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River. It is part of the Western Ghats, which is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its outstanding biodiversity.

The area’s conservation history began in 1934 when the Maharaja of Travancore declared it the Nellikkampatty Game Sanctuary to stop the encroachment of tea plantations. It was officially consolidated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and brought under the Indian government’s “Project Tiger” initiative in 1978. It was later declared a National Park in 1982.

It takes around 5 hours by car to reach the reserve from Trivendrum and costs around INR 8000. You need to do hard bargaining with the cab drivers to get good rates. A similar time takes from the Munnar [a famous hill station in Kerala for its tea plantations] too. As the public transportation facilities are not that well developed in the southern state, the most reliable option is to book a cab. There is a limited number of vehicles allowed in the reserve each day, and the last entry is just before sunset.

Since this is a protected area, the accommodation options are scarce. The KTDC operates three properties here, each offering a unique experience and belonging to different budget categories. The cheapest option is KTDC Periyar House. If you are an eco-tourist on a tighter budget but still want the thrill of staying inside the sanctuary, this is the perfect spot. It is located just a short walk from the lake and offers a down-to-earth, comfortable stay surrounded by lush greenery. The KTDC Aranya Niwas is a mid-range option situated right on the Periya Lake. It is a fantastic option for wildlife enthusiasts who want to be immersed in the forest but still have access to comfortable amenities. The most expensive one is the KTDC Lake Palace. It is a former summer palace of the King of Travancore, located on its own island right in the middle of Periyar Lake, accessible only by a 20-minute boat ride from the mainland. You can check out and book these places on the official KTDC website.

The most popular time to visit is during the cooler, drier months from October to March, though wildlife viewing by the lake is often best during the hotter, drier months of March and April when animals are drawn to the water. Unlike many other national parks in India that focus heavily on open-jeep safaris, Periyar offers a unique set of eco-tourism activities:
Monsoon Access: Uniquely, Periyar remains open to tourists year-round, including during the monsoon season (June to September).
Boat Safaris: The most popular way to see wildlife is by taking a boat cruise on Periyar Lake.
Bamboo Rafting & Trekking: The park offers guided walking trails, jungle patrols, and bamboo rafting led by local indigenous communities and forest guards.

Taking a boat cruise on Periyar Lake is a truly unique experience. Operating out of KTDC Aranya Nivas, the 1.5-hour journey is best experienced first thing in the morning. I highly recommend booking the 7:00 AM slot for something entirely magical. At that hour, the lake is heavily shrouded in mist. As the sun rises and your boat glides forward, the fog slowly begins to fade away, creating the surreal sensation that you are quietly cruising straight into the unknown. You get to see a variety of wildlife during the cruise. The most popular are elephants. Herds of elephants are frequently spotted along the banks of the lake, especially in the early mornings and late afternoons. Other noticeable categories include Sambar Deer, Gaur (Indian Bison), Wild Boars, Smooth Indian Otters, and abundant birdlife.

Between the rich history of the sanctuary and the unique opportunity to stay directly inside the reserve, a trip to Periyar is unlike a typical wildlife safari. Whether you choose the luxury of Lake Palace or the rustic charm of Periyar House, the real magic happens out on the water. If you only take away one piece of advice from this guide, make sure it’s this: book that 7:00 AM boat cruise. Watching the elephants emerge from the forest as the morning fog lifts off the lake is an unforgettable way to experience Kerala’s wilderness.
